The Last Dinner Party is a British indie rock band hailing from London, formed in 2021. The lineup comprises Abigail Morris (vocals), Lizzie Mayland (vocals, guitar), Emily Roberts (lead guitar, mandolin, flute), Georgia Davies (bass), and Aurora Nishevci (keys, vocals). Though lacking a permanent drummer, Rebekah Rayner joins them for live performances.
The band inked a deal with Island Records and introduced themselves to the music scene with their debut single, "Nothing Matters," released in April 2023. Following this, three more singles were unveiled in the same year. Their inaugural studio album, "Prelude to Ecstasy," is set to be unleashed on February 2, 2024. Notably, The Last Dinner Party embarked on their first headline tour of the UK and US starting October 2023.
In recognition of their burgeoning success, the band secured the Rising Star Brit Award in December 2023 and subsequently won the BBC Sound of 2024 poll.
The band's origin story traces back to 2020 when Morris, Davies, and Mayland, who met in London before university, decided to form a band inspired by the notion of a hedonistic banquet – originally named 'The Dinner Party.' After a friend recommended Roberts as a guitarist, and Nishevci was brought in, the lineup was complete. Despite initial challenges due to the COVID-19 lockdown, they debuted live in November 2021 and spent the following year refining their sound and gaining traction on the London live circuit.
Under the name 'The Last Dinner Party,' they signed with Island Records to avoid confusion with a hip hop supergroup. James Ford produced their debut single "Nothing Matters," released in April 2023, which became part of the EA Sports FC 24 soundtrack. The band supported Florence and the Machine during the summer of 2023 and performed at notable festivals like Glastonbury and Latitude.
Their second single, "Sinner," dropped in June 2023, followed by "My Lady of Mercy" in October. The band made their debut on the BBC show Later... with Jools Holland in October 2023.
Musically, The Last Dinner Party has been described as having a distinctive baroque-pop sound with influences ranging from Kate Bush and Siouxsie and the Banshees to Sparks and Warpaint. The band members cite David Bowie as a prominent influence on their musical style.
